Yesterday, we looked at how God and two angels stopped by Abraham’s tent and warned him that they were going to Sodom and Gomorrah to assess the conditions there, and if need be, swiftly execute judgment. Later, when they arrived at the city gate, Abraham’s nephew Lot was waiting for them. Possibly having heard about the Lord’s intent to destroy his hometown, he wanted to get the men to his house, either to deter them or to keep them safe. Unfortunately, later that night, a mob of angry locals came to his door demanding to have sex with the visitors. This was an abhorrent request, and when he refused to permit his guests to be subjected to such evil, the crowd grew even more obstinate. Thankfully, since they were angels endowed with divine power, the houseguests acted swiftly to cause blindness in the members of the gang, and soon after, God invoked judgment on the city. He gave Lot and his family enough time to escape, and His angelic ministers of mercy took them by the hand and led them from the coming wrath. When I consider this account, I’m touched by the fact that not only did the Lord spare a remnant, but He guided them every step of the way out of destruction. Likewise, today, our Heavenly Father is faithful to lead us safely away from all kinds of sins and snares. There is no temptation too deep nor trap too entangling for His loving arms to reach, and He is willing to go to the depths to ensure that we can walk in freedom.
