The Power of Peace

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

– John 14:27

It’s interesting that the dictionary defines peace as “freedom from disturbance.” And while I love to imagine life without all forms of distraction, noise, and chaos, I realize that such a state of existence isn’t possible on a planet that’s marred by the effects of sin and brokenness. The reality is that the weight of the world is heavy, and it’s easy to become bogged down by the pain and trouble that surround us. Each of us has gone through a lot in the past twelve months, and we’ve seen things unfold that we never imagined we would. The global pandemic, loss of life and income, civil unrest, and a prolonged change to our daily routines has affected all of us to varying degrees, and it’s important not to minimize or deny that fact. However, it’s equally as important not to allow our emotions to ride the roller coaster of shifting circumstances. The devil is in the business of getting people off center, and he’s diligently carrying out his work of discouragement in this season. Thankfully, to counter his schemes, our loving and steady Heavenly Father deposits perfect peace directly into our souls. While the world sees tranquility as possible only when external forces cease striving, our Savior causes divine rest to rule in our hearts, regardless of what’s happening around us. The Prince of Peace reminds us that because He is sovereign, we can remain calm and anchored, even when storms are swirling in our midst.

My friend, whatever you’re facing today, Jesus invites you to find a home in His peace. Settle your soul in His presence, sit quietly at His feet, and take a deep breath as you invoke His Spirit to still the seas that rage inside of you. Place all that’s troubling you in His strong hands, and offer your concerns to Him as a sacrifice, knowing that He will fight your battles as you remain at rest. He is able to do much more than you can ask for or imagine through your childlike faith, and He is lovingly tending to your well-being so your heart can overcome every kind of human disturbance.

Prayer

Jesus, you are my Prince of Peace. I ask for your supernatural rest to rule in my heart today.
